Community Pediatrics and Child Advocacy Rotation Schedule

INTERN YEAR ONE

Rotation Goals:

The goal of the Community Pediatrics and Child Advocacy Rotation is to 1) expose residents to patients of diverse cultural, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds, 2) actively engage residents in multiple child advocacy activities, and 3) provide residents with the opportunity to further develop strong educational, teaching, and presentation skills.

This rotation takes advantage of the linkages that the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital has with the East Palo Alto and San Jose communities and the faculty members who are children’s advocates. By working in outpatient pediatric care in a variety of settings, the residents are exposed to the social, economic, environmental and behavioral forces that contribute to the health needs of the East Palo Alto , Redwood City , East Menlo Park , Mountain View and San Jose communities. Residents examine how advocacy issues and interventions contribute to improved health outcomes for these populations.

Residents participate in a Class Advocacy Project during this rotation. This project will help the resident accomplish three things: 1) redefine the job of the pediatrician to include children’s advocacy, 2) develop a knowledge base about an advocacy topic, and 3) develop advocacy skills. The Class Advocacy Project will amplify the unique role that pediatricians can play in reducing risk factors that predispose children to adverse health outcomes and stress the individual, community, and policy levels on which advocacy functions.

Rotation Objectives:

  1. Develop an understanding of delivering health care to children in many contexts by seeing patients in the community settings of the Ravenswood Family Health Center in East Palo Alto and the Santa Clara Valley Mobile Health Van in San Jose.
  2. Visit patients and their families in their homes with public health nurses through the San Mateo County Pre-to-three home visiting program.
  3. Meet community health workers, such as WIC and Head Start or Early Start staff.
  4. Meet with experts in health insurance programs in order to learn about the safety net insurance programs for children, and to learn about the enrollment process for Medi-Cal or Healthy Families.
  5. Examining the health and social risks associated with homelessness in the Bay Area and talking to homeless families about their health concerns at a local homeless shelter.
  6. Learn about the services provided by the Family Advocacy Program, a partnership between the Legal Aid Society of San Mateo County and LPCH.
  7. Gain familiarity with the concept of cultural sensitivity, and discuss the impacts of culture and ethnicity with your preceptors in clinic and through your advocacy work.
